Bowery Poetry presents THE SEER: CELEBRATING ABIODUN OYEWOLE, featuring the film screening of the short film THE BLIND SEER OF CONEY ISLAND (2022), produced and directed by Vagabond on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, 7:00pm-9:30pm. This celebration will feature poets Youssef Alaoui, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Liza Jessie Peterson, Sharrif Simmons, Thea Matthews and Ademola Lewis, with a special appearance by the musical group, Faith NYC, featuring Felice Rosser, Jahn Xavier and Fin Hunt.

Abiodun Oyewole  is a poet, teacher, and founding member of the American music and spoken word group The Last Poets  in 1968. The Last Poets influenced jazz and the emergence of hip hop artists ranging from Pharaoh Sanders and Senegalese drummer Aiyb Dieng to Public Enemy, and they have also collaborated with contemporary artists such as Common and Wu-Tang Clan. In the past decade, Oyewole has focused on his own singing and writing. He released two solo song albums, and published two poetry collections, a book of essays, and is the editor of Black Lives Have Always Mattered  (2017). In THE BLIND SEER OF CONEY ISLAND, Oyewole flexes his poetic muscles in an outstanding performance that should not be missed.

This historic program will be held at the Bowery Poetry, a performance space at Bowery and Bleecker Street. It was founded in 2001 as Bowery Poetry Club (BPC), and provided a home base for established and upcoming artists. It was founded by Bob Holman, owner of the building and former Nuyorican Poets Cafe Poetry Slam MC (1988–1996). Tickets are $25 and are available for sale at EVENTBRITE.
