Chan purposely named the event “Kitchen Table Talk” to present a small, informal discussion that investigates a wide range of issues relevant to Black women, including Black womanhood, the public perception of Black women, and the trials and tribulations they have undergone to satisfactorily secure their careers while highlighting the bright spots of their achievements. “Besides digging deeper on these issues,” says Chan, an English and economics major at the University of Rochester working this semester at 2Leaf Press. “I also want to elicit their advice to young Black women and the broader audience of various women of color.” The event will also feature author David, the publisher of 2Leaf Press, and contributors Dr. Chandra D. L. Waring, an assistant professor of sociology at UMass Lowell, and Lyah Beth LeFlore, a bestselling author, film and television producer.

LaSaia Wade, Debra Austin and Bianca Smith represent the activists, dancers and athletes featured in Volume 1. Wade is a Black transgender activist who created the Brave Space Alliance, the first major organization developed to meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ community in Chicago. Austin is the first Black woman to achieve the role of principal dancer outside of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Smith is the first Black woman hired as a professional baseball coach and works in the Boston Red Sox organization. Panelists will also talk about the pressures they faced and how they coped with them. Wade, Austin and Smith’s stories will reiterate to the audience that no matter how difficult the circumstance, some dreams are just worth fighting for.

Be sure to join us on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 6 to 8 pm.
