Here’s Why . . . I have found myself more than disappointed in Amazon’s fulfillment services and product page issues in recent years. I am not alone. Publishers from around the U.S., including the Big Five publishing companies, have expressed their frustration at the lack of access to helpful Amazon support, the difficulty of fixing issues or inaccuracies on Amazon product pages, as well as delayed deliveries, which have become even worse, understandably, because of COVID. Our biggest complaint is that Amazon often displays a “Temporarily Out of Stock,” which misleads readers into believing the book is not available, when in fact, it is. But due to Amazon’s stringent stock availability policy, constantly changing algorithms, and the challenge of maintaining a global eCommerce site, this has become a real problem. While other reseller sites such as Books-A-Million, Barnes and Noble, Powell’s may not provide the free shipping incentives that Amazon offers, they are less disruptive to our sales because they allow readers to purchase the book, even if it is on backorder. And for this lack of service, Amazon still takes a considerable chunk from our profits when they do sell our books.
