Has to Say About 2Leaf Press[/trx_title]
Five years ago, when I saw there was a new press that published Nuyorican poetry I felt it was destiny. That statement needs explanation—I’m white, and never participated in Nuyorican poetry slams—but getting my MFA in New York City, the one place where I felt I really heard poetry was by the Nuyoricans. The poetry there wasn’t about back-scratching a famous professor. It was real; it hurt, it soared, it etched itself in my mind. So when I saw 2Leaf Press was up and coming and publishing Nuyorican poets, I thought maybe here’s a place that can handle the material that I write about—homelessness, poverty, and abuse. On December 31, 2013, I ceremonially walked my manuscript of poems to the mailbox at the corner of Charlottesville’s city gardens. I’ve been a part of 2Leaf Press ever since then—well, ever since eight months later when I heard from them. Being a 2Leaf Press author means the freedom to write about material that matters to our country, to our world, without having to make it comfortable for the bourgeoisie to read. It’s about truth-telling. That’s 2Leaf.
