Vagabond is a contemporary Nuyorican artist, writer, filmmaker, anarchist and idealist from New York whose work is inflected with echoes of fine art, street art, and hip-hop, a testament to the artist’s cultural omnivorousness. NOTHING TO BE GAINED HERE originally began as a blog, a virtual space Vagabond carved out to present his “less than ideal art and ideas for a less than ideal world.” The book of the same name, partly influenced by Jean-Michel Basquiat, celebrates the early impact of broadsides of the counter-cultural sixties that have been essential to resistance movements for more than 150 years. As you’d expect, the layouts are stunning and vivid, and its 8.5×11 book size makes a fine addition to coffee-table-type books. NOTHING TO BE GAINED HERE gives readers an all-encompassing view of an artist for whom daily life and the creative process overlap constantly and are the ultimate celebration of artistry, agility, expression and perseverance. This is the first monograph of Vagabond’s work but likely won’t be the last.
