Myrna Nieves

MYRNA NIEVES is a writer and educator, born in Puerto Rico. A founding member and Professor Emeritus at Boricua College, she was director for over twenty years of its Winter Poetry Series, an annual series of readings and performances by Latino writers, and writers from other cultures. Nieves is also cofounder of ‘7 Women in Movement,’ a group of artists from New York City who seek to support Puerto Rico with exhibitions and other events. She has published the books Libreta de sueños (narraciones) (1997), Viaje a la lluvia, poemas (2002), El Caribe, paraíso y paradoja: Visiones del intelectual en Alejo Carpentier y Emilio Díaz Valcárcel (2012), Breaking Ground: Anthology of Puerto Rican Women Writers in New York 1980-2012 (2012) and, in collaboration with artist Yarisa Colón, the hand-made fiction/art book, Another Version of Hansel and Gretel/ Otra versión de Hansel y Gretel (2014). She is co-author and co-editor of the literary collection Tripartita: Earth, Dreams, Powers (1990) and also the compiler and co-author of the section of Puerto Rican writers in the anthologies Mujeres como islas (2002) and Mujeres como islas II (2011). Nieves is co-founder of And Then Press and a Bureau Chief (curator) for the magazine And Then.

Nieves has received numerous honors, including Literary Award of the PEN Club of Puerto Rico (1998), Education and Poetry Award from the Instituto de Puerto Rico (2013), and The Latina 50+ 2016 Literature Award. Myrna Nieves has a BA in World Literature from the University of Puerto Rico, a MA in Spanish from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Latin American and Caribbean Literature from New York University.
