MAYA WASHINGTON is a poet, actor, filmmaker, and arts educator. She holds a BA from the University of Southern California, and an MFA from Hamline University. Her work has appeared in literary journals and anthologies including Prairie Schooner, Gulf Coast, and The Playwright’s Center Monologues for Women (2005). She edited White Space Poetry Anthology (2014), featuring the work of deaf and hearing artists as a companion to her award-winning film, White Space (2011). She is currently the writer, director and producer of the football documentary, Through the Banks of the Red Cedar (2022) about her father, Vikings and Michigan State football legend Gene Washington. She has received funding from the Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television and others. Her film work has allowed her projects to have a global reach, most recently in Toronto, Budapest, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Rome. https://www.mayawashington.net.
