J. KATES is a poet and literary translator who lives in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. He serves as the president and co-director of Zephyr Press, a non-profit press that focuses on contemporary works in translation from Russia, Eastern Europe and Asia. Kates has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry, a Translation Project Fellowship, an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and the Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation for the Selected Poems of Mikhail Yeryomin (2014). A former president of the American Literary Translators Association, he is the translation editor of Contemporary Russian Poetry, the editor of In the Grip of Strange Thoughts: Russian Poetry in a New Era (2000), and co-translator of four books of Latin American poetry. Kates has published three poetry chapbooks, including Metes and Bounds (2010), and The Old Testament (2010); and the poetry collection, The Briar Patch: Selected Poems & Translations (2012). His latest translation, Muddy River: Selected Poems by Sergey Stratanovsky (2016), is forthcoming.
