CARTER DOUGLASS is the seventh generation to live on the family farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, from which ancestors left to fight on both sides of the Civil War. She published the chapbook, Somebody’s Child (2000), and her work has been published in the Potomac Review. She is a member of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and serves on the board of Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University, the only academic center in the nation devoted to African American poetry. Her mentorship and friendship with Lucille Clifton continues to open doors.
