National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the country’s history, heritage and culture.
Okay, so we are a little late.
But the thing here is that since its founding, 2Leaf Press has always recognized the contributions of Latinos by publishing quite a few books by them, actually a total of thirteen books to date. In fact our very first book, in 2012, was Hey Yo! Yo Soy! by Jesús Papoleto Meléndez. We did not plan on it being a translated work, but circumstances allowed us to do something unique, translate from English to Spanish, which is unheard of and actually disqualified us from winning any awards (they do not give awards for translating from English to another language).
In total, we have done four translations (the other three Spanish to English), have published seven books by Puerto Ricans, three books by South Americans, one book by a Spaniard, and one book by a Mexican. We also had two books co-edited by a South American, who is also the editor of the 2LP Explorations in Diversity series (guess who? Sean Frederick Forbes). And we have two translated books by two Puerto Ricans coming out in 2020.
So for us, we celebrate Latino culture all year long because it is part of 2Leaf Press’ mandate to celebrate multicultural works.
Great literature does not come from one specific place, it comes from everywhere. Even though it was seemingly an accident as we stumbled into publishing our first book as a translation, looking back it makes sense. The axis of our publications is poetry, short stories, memoirs, and our specialty, personal narratives, which also includes translations since we publish authors from around the globe. So we will see you next spring with more titles here at 2Leaf Press that reflect different cultures because we are not relegated to monthly celebrations.
To show our appreciation, all of these titles will be available for sale in print and ebook at a 20 percent discount, available only through University of Chicago Press. Just click on the book below and type in the discount code, LATINXSPECIAL. Offer good through December 31, 2019. Happy reading!
